STAWELLTALK:  18 TO 25 MARCH  2014:

Hello everyone, hope this bulletin finds you all well, and if not at least on the improve, WITH special thoughts to PP Pauline who is still in recovery mode from her surgery.

Well now we are in for a busy time in the next few weeks, but the good news is that efforts to fill the roster for the Art Show, have borne fruit and the show is covered,  that is excellent news, as it looked bleak for a while there, but things have sorted them selves out , so our thanks to the members for their efforts  to continue the art show.

Wee in need of Arms and legs to get the Stands out to Halls gap on the Tuesday April 15th, we have two or three but another two or three would make the job so much easier and faster.  So if we have any male friends that can give us a hand in that area please notify Pres Kim.

We had some short reports on the art Show as shown above, and others on the Philippines donations, PP John L has notified the relevant authorities and is waiting a reply.

The evening for the Youngsters to go Public on the Vietnam tour  by way of thanking those who supported the tour, is still waiting on the youngsters them selves, as their schedules are quite busy at this time.  But again  PP John L, is over this and although it is doubtful anything will occur prior to Easter very soon after is looking good.

We received an e-mail from PP Pauline re a raffle to be run on the evening, with all kinds of magic things brought back from Vietnam, that require a few fillers via the Club, that will make up for two prizes,  so that excellent and things are under way with this as well.

A question to be decided at the next Board was raised, if we are going to go on with the trip next year 2015, with some doubt regarding the access to the youngsters from the college.

A BBQ at Cato park next Friday 21 March Sausage sizzle @ $2 each with the funds going to the Club.  Another BBQ at Stawell West Primary on 28 May 2014 with no charge by us, has been approved.

Interesting News heard, about the traps that the Apex club has finalised their input at Federation Park, “Interesting”

And the assembly Sunday 4 May 2014, the word is that this is to be run in a different format than in the past, so it will be interesting to see if it goes ahead, under this different method, but no matter what method of imparting the message is, the set up will remain the same, so our job has not changed.  Set up starting on the Saturday morning, and of course the breakdown on the Sunday. That is an all hands on deck, so make a note in your diary, phone   what ever.

We are to have another speaker next week , but as yet we are not aware of who it may be, the Program arranger had missed out on the final  meeting for the month, so we will wait in anticipation for the guest.  But we have had a great history lesson over the past two weeks, and the Ed for one has learnt a great deal about the Town of Stawell,  particularly so as a not born here,  blow in.

Our speaker this week was Mrs Wendy Melbourne, a member of the Stawell Historical Society, for many years and a stalwart of the society with her cataloguing work amongst other areas, within the group.

This evening turned into a series of reminisces, of times past rather than a formal talk as such, so to report on it is a near impossibility,  But  it was an interest level that caused almost excitement from some of the members, as their minds were taken back to their earlier days and the memories they had .

The really interesting part of all this was the names that were spoken of how they dressed where they worked how many children they had, even down to the colour of a car that one famous name used to drive, but the names were as familiar to the Ed as to every one in the meeting, that was born and bred in the town.

Even the town Name , in the first instance called Pleasant Creek, but  proclaimed, in 1858 as Stawell after Sir William Stawell, who was the Chief Justice of Victoria  at that time. various members of associated or extended family members had streets named after them, Longfield St, Foster and Seaby St’s, to name just a few.  But the more Wendy mentioned the more one understood , for all of these names are just so well known to the people in  Stawell.

Hearing where the names came from and what relationship they were to  Sir William Stawell, it was almost like speaking about old friends.  Added to this is some of the old homes and buildings that came along in that century, that we see almost on a day to day basis, have now taken on a different appeal altogether.

But the Ed reminisces, long after this information it was really a large interest group, chatting happily away, with questions being fielded by Wendy along the way, and so It was impossible to report fully on,  but at least it can be said that it was a most entertaining evening , and was in fact the perfect follow on from the week before

Our thanks to Wendy and to PE Vaughan, who has supplied 2 very special weeks in a row following on from the brilliant speakers we have had prior to that time.  well done, and a most enjoyable evening for all in attendance.

Vaughan has set a very high Bar so it will be interesting to see what he is able to come up with next week.

As we move into April, with Rtn Kaye to look after us,

Normans nonsense..

e never knew of Normans interest in birds before but it appears that he knows a fair bit, as the following will explain.

Have you wondered what happened to Penguins that die on the ice in Antarctica?,  Norman has the answer for you.

It is little known fact that Penguins are a highly ritualistic birds that lead extremely ordered yet complex life.  The penguin mates for life, and will retain a form of compassionate contact  with its offspring throughout life as well.

When a penguin is found dead on the Ice, the other members of the family and social group, have been known to peck holes in the ice with their beaks, until such time as the hole is big enough for the dead bird to be rolled into it , and cover it over with the ice removed to make the hole..

The male penguins, and only the males shuffle around the grave , and in their own way start to sing.  “Freeze a jolly good fellow”   “Freeze a jolly good fellow.”

So there you go, and you didn’t think Norman knew anything about Penguins at all, did you.?

Thank you,  that’s about all from me for now, have a great week in Rotary, and…

Remember

To pursue your passion and never achieve it,  is a far better thing than never having a passion and living with regret forever.   Ed
