PP John Artz was invited to give personal Vocational Talk about his life and career.
John was born in 1945 in Holland and emigrated to Australia with his family in 1956.
On leaving school he joined the PMG as a Technician in Training, moving to Melbourne to attend the PMG Course over 5 years which was well respected as many who graduated were invited to join Commercial TV stations.
In John’s case his work took him around Victoria to places such as Horsham, Kilmore, Shepparton (Radio Australia). In those days technicians climbed 550 foot towers as he did to change aviation lights – without safety harnesses – now adays they are highlighted by ground based strobe lights. Also at the time they did not switch the transmitters off – you could light fluorescent globes with the radiation.
He also took part in the building of the micro wave links from Melbourne to Sydney and Melbourne to Adelaide. He was also involved at work on Mt Cole TV transmitters then at Swan Hill and saw the technology develop from valve transmitters through solid state to digital transmission.
In 1992 he took redundancy rather than go to Melbourne – he took two years off and built their house at Halls Gap. Then he and his wife Judy purchased a Book City Shop in Swan Hill, the first of the book nfranchise, of which there were eventually 36. Along came Collins Boks who bought the Book City.
In 2013 John and Judy retired to Halls Gap, much to our good fortune in Stawell.
John’s Vocational talk was a very interesting one as it covered a very important development stage in the growth of communication technology.

Baptising An Irishman
An Irish man is stumbling through the woods, totally drunk, when he comes upon a preacher baptizing people in the river.
The drunk proceeds into the water, subsequently bumping into the preacher.
The preacher turns around and is almost overcome by the smell of alcohol, whereupon, he asks the drunk, “Are you ready to find Jesus?”
The drunk shouts, “Yes, oi am.”
So the preacher grabs him and dunks him in the water. He pulls him back and asks, “Brother, have you found Jesus?” The drunk replies, “No, oi haven’t found Jesus!”
The preacher, shocked at the answer, dunks him again but for a little longer.
He again pulls him out of the water and asks, “Have you found Jesus, me brother?” The drunk answers, “No, oi haven’t found Jesus!” By this time, the preacher is at his wits end and dunks the drunk again — but this time holds him down for about 30 seconds, and when he begins kicking his arms and legs about, he pulls him up. The preacher again asks the drunk, “For the love of God, have you found Jesus?” The drunk staggers upright, wipes his eyes, coughs up a bit of water, catches his breath, and says to the preacher,
“Are you sure this is where he fell in”?
